WHY TELL FAIRY TALES TO YOUR CHILD?
Studies have repeatedly shown that reading to your child enhances vocabulary, comprehension and bonding with parents. Taking a few minutes at night can be beneficial to your child for practical reasons while giving you the opportunity to pass on a family memory or reading together. Reading and connecting will become a cherished part of your little one's childhood as they grow into adulthood.
WHAT IS A FAIRY TALE
A fairy tale is a short story that is distinguished with the inclusion of fairies, giants, or elves, usually with far fetched events. It can also include many tall tales, and can also include witches or other evil characters. A fairy tale is a story that probably has origins in oral history, with more recent variations existing in written form. They often have several different variations of the same story, and as time goes on they are embellished more.
Traditionally it was targeted for adult audiences as well as children. As time went by, the stories became used more as a mild moral lesson for children, through use of fictional stories. The stories are intended to make us rethink how we should deal with certain people and situations.
While there are often dark elements in a fairy tale, such as wicked step parents, evil witches that cast spells, and other mythical creatures the thing that makes fairy tales different from a dark tale is there is generally a happy ever after. Some of the most common characters in the story are the hero/heroine (often a princess and her prince), which have experienced some tragic event. There will be a protagonist, such as the witch or other tormentor that presents a challenge.
The good must overcome evil - and how the characters do it is where the moral lesson is.
So, what is the best way to introduce fairy tales to your child? When picking a selection of books, make sure you get at least one with a collection of tried and true favorites. When reading to your child, pick some of the famous stories that you hold dear to your heart - your child will hear your passion for your stories as you read.
When you are reading, you don't have to tell the story in a monotone voice. Make up different voice for the different characters. Create a visual picture for your child when telling the story. One of the most popular teaching methods is predicting the next event in the story. When telling a familiar story, make sure that you ask questions to help your child learn how to use these reading skills.
One way you can expand your child's imagination with fairy tales is to use modern variations of the stories to promote a love of the fairy tale. Think along the lines of the new movie releases that present the stories in bright color and animation. Shrek is a new spin on an old type of fairy tale, creating a new hero and heroine within the story.
These characters teach your child about what is really good (not what is on the outside) and how to fight the bad. The heroes in the stories teach that good always overcomes evil. Let your child help make up his/her own fairy tale to foster creativity. Draw pictures of your favorite characters. Write different endings to the story. There is no right or wrong way to tell it.
The beauty of this literary genre is that it is so versatile and applies to any age group or interest. Fairy tales are timeless classics, and have held their place in the literary choices for hundreds of years because of the appealing way morals are snuck into a great story line.
