How I Became A Pirate - Melinda Long

Today Nanny is going to read Ella the book How I Became A Pirate by Melinda Long. Ella is so excited this is one of her favorite books!

Today she is getting dressed in her pirate costume so she could pretend to be Jeremy as he learns many things about pirates living on a pirate ship. Ella loves to use her imagination while Nanny reads to her. Today she will learn what a pirate does. She pretends to be Jeremy and learns from the pirates.

How I Became A Pirate by Melinda Long is a wonderful book for children 4-8 years old. Melinda's story builds the imagination of a child with the way she describes a pirate's life. Illustrations by David Shannon are vivid are vivid and add to the fun of becoming a pirate.

This book is about Jeremy Jacob. He is at the beach building a sand castle when he sees a pirate ship. Captain Braid Beard and his crew come ashore. They recognize Jeremy as an exceptionally talented digger, and they happen to be in desperate need of a digger to help them bury a treasure chest.

The captain asks Jeremy to join his crew. Jeremy thinks a pirate life sounds like fun, as long as he’ is back the next day in time for soccer practice, and so he goes along with the ragtag group of seafaring thugs (with hearts of gold, naturally).

He learns that Pirates have green teeth, don't wear pajamas and don't eat vegetables. Jeremy also learns how to say “scurvy dog,” sing sea chanteys, and throw food!

While Jeremy adores the pirates’ lack table manners and opposition to vegetables, he comes to realize that a life away from his parents lacks some of the nice things he loves. He learns that there are no books to read, except for a treasure map and no good night kisses. "Pirates don't tuck."

Ella is so excited that she gets to learn how to play soccer and even bury a treasure chest with the pirates.
